He has been working in the field of disaster medicine since 1999 with main focus on hospital disaster management, both in natural and man-made disasters. He has been involved in more than 25 research project, and is currently working in two European projects: 1) TIER, integrated strategy for CBRN threat identification and emergency response; 2) THREATS, Terrorist attacks on hospitals: Risk and Emergency Assessment, Tools and Systems.
Francesco Della Corte, MD, Hon Fellow EuSEM, Degree in Medicine and Surgery (1979). He was the first Associate Professor in Disaster Medicine in Italy (1992) and currently is full Professor in Anesthesia, Critical Care and Critical Emergency Medicine at the Università del Piemonte Orientale, Dipartimento di Medicina Traslazionale in Novara and Director of the Emergency medicine Department of the Maggiore Hospital School of Medicine. He served as Honorary Secretary to the European Society for Emergency Medicine from 1999 to 2006. He is the co-initiator of the Mediterranean Emergency Medicine Conference (the largest congress in the world of international emergency medicine) and Founder of the European Master in Disaster Medicine. Currently he is actively involved, at academic level, in training medical professionals in Disaster and Mass Casualty Incidents management.
He was involved in different projects funded by European Union. He authored more than 140 full papers published on peer-reviewed, impacted journals and was invited speaker in more than 350 national and international congresses.
Pier Luigi Ingrassia, graduated from University of Palermo, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Palermo, Italy, started a residency in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (finished in 2006) and obtained his PhD in Experimental and Clinical Medicine (Disaster Medicine and Education).
Area of special interest during residency & lecturership – Emergency Medicine, Disasters and Mass Casualty Incidents. Involved in management of disasters in the city of Manshera, Pakistan, after the earthquake in 2005, as Medical Coordinator of the Italian Field Hospital. Involved in management of disasters in the city of Jojakarta, Indonesia, after the earthquake in 2006, as Italian surgical team coordinator. Involved in a capacity building project, funded by Italian Cooperation – Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by Italian National Institute of Health and National Institute of Health Sciences of Sri Lanka, to strengthen the country’s capability in disaster preparedness and complex emergencies management. Involved in drafting a Disaster Plan for the UniversityHospital in Novara, Italy.
Working for almost a year for World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe as Consultant and Technical Officer for Emergency Medical Services and Hospital System: involved in a European project funded by European Commission and other projects in Albania, Romania, Macedonia, KyrgyzRepublic.
Currently working as researcher in Disaster Medicine at the Research Centre in Emergency and Disaster Medicine (CRIMEDIM) at University of Eastern Piedmont, Novara, Italy, where is vice-director, coordinating the research and education activities. Actively involved in training medical students and hospital staff in Disaster and Mass Casualty Incidents management.
Completed the Diploma of European Masters in Disaster Medicine, in 2002/2003, through the University of Eastern Piedmont, Novara, Italy, and the Free University of Brussels, Brussels, Belgium. Since than, collaborating as Faculty member. Secretary of the Executive Board of the Emergency Medicine and Disaster Management Academy (EMDM Academy).
